Azzam (suicide bomber)
Azzam is the name given to the unidentified suicide bomber who bombed the US embassy in Nairobi during the 1998 US Embassy bombings, killing 213 people including himself.
Role in the bombing
On 7th August 1998, Azzam and Mohamed Rashed Daoud Al-Owhali drove a truck laden with explosives to the US embassy in Nairobi, where Al-Owhali fired on guard Benson Okuku Bwaku after he refused to open the gates. They then drove through the gates, where Al-Owhali threw a stun grenade at the embassy guards before jumping out of the truck and running away. Azzam then detonated the explosives, killing himself, Bwaku and 211 others.
