Dato' Seri Azmin Ali (born Mohamed Azmin bin Ali; 25 August 1964 - ) is a Malaysian politician currently serving as the Senior Minister for Economy and the Minister of International Trade and Industry since March 2020 in the ruling Perikatan Nasional administration led by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin.

He served as the Minister of Economic Affairs from May 2018 to February 2020 in the Pakatan Harapan administration led by former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad and as the Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) of Selangor from 2014 to 2018. He is the Member of Parliament for Gombak, as well as the assemblyman for Bukit Antarabangsa in the Selangor State Assembly. He was the founding member and the former deputy president of Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) before leaving the political party for Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) in 2020. He is also the former president of the Football Association of Selangor (FAS).


Azmin Ali joined the civil service in 1987 as Special Officer to Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, the then Minister of Education. He later served as Private Secretary to Anwar when the latter assumed the office of Finance Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia.

Following the tumultuous events of 1998 when Anwar was removed from office and incarcerated, Azmin plunged headlong into the Reformasi movement and assumed a major role in determining the direction of the newly minted political party which played and continues to play a pivotal in reshaping the political landscape of the nation.

Azmin is a representative of both the Federal Parliament as well as the State Legislature of Selangor, having been elected to office since 1999.

Prior to being appointed to his current Federal Cabinet post, he assumed the office of Menteri Besar (Chief Minister) in September 2014 and had been instrumental in placing Selangor more prominently on the regional and global map after having continually maintained the state as the biggest contributor to the national GDP. Azmin relinquished his post as Dato’ Menteri Besar of Selangor on June 19, 2018.

Azmin is the author of Membangun Bangsa wherein his vision for the nation and the people is articulated. He is married to Shamshida Taharin and they have six children. Azmin holds a Bachelor’s degree in Economics and Mathematics and a Master’s degree in Education and Economics from the University of Minnesota.
