- January 19 - Yahya Jammeh is finally forced from power in the Gambia following interventions from other neighboring countries, allowing Adama Barrow to finally take office.
- January 28 - Tahrir al-Sham is founded via a merger of several other jihadist organizations, including Al-Nusra Front.
- January 29 - Quebec City mosque shooting
- February 1 - Antifa protesters attend an event featuring right-wing activist Milo Yiannopolous at the University of California, Berkeley, causing widespread property damage and eventually forcing the event to be canceled.
- February 13 - Kim Jong-nam, half-brother of Kim Jong-un, is assassinated, possibly on Jong-un's orders.
- March 10 - Park Geun-Hye is removed from office.
- March 31 - Park Geun-Hye is arrested and charged with abuse of power, coercion, bribery and leaking government secrets.
- May 22 - The Manchester Arena bombing is perpetrated by Salman Abedi.

- August 12 - The Unite the Right rally takes place. Following the rally, James Alex Fields Jr. injures 19 and kills 1 in a vehicular assault.

- September 25 - José Eduardo dos Santos steps down as President of Angola.
- October 1 - Stephen Paddock commits the 2017 Las Vegas shooting, killing 58 people and injuring 869 others before committing suicide.
- October 14 - Al-Shabaab perpetrates two truck bombings in Mogadishu, Somalia, killing 587 people and injuring 316 others. The attack is the deadliest in Somalian history.
- October 23 - The Battle of Marawi ends.
- November 5 - Devin Patrick Kelley commits the Sutherland Springs Church shooting, killing 26 people (one being an unborn child) and injures 20 others. Kelley later committed suicide after he lost control of his car and crashed during a high-speed chase.
- November 21 - Robert Mugabe is ousted as President of Zimbabwe by members of his own party, ZANU-PF. He is subsequently replaced by Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
- November 22 - The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) finds Ratko Mladić guilty of ten charges (one of genocide, five of crimes against humanity and four of violations of the laws or customs of war) and sentences him to life in prison.
