  • January 2 - The Workers' Party of Korea arrests visiting American student Otto Warmbier for allegedly tearing down a propaganda poster at the hotel he had been staying at.
  • January 22 - WOMAD is founded.
  • March - Identity Evropa (later known as the American Identity Movement) is founded by Nathan Damigo.
  • March 22 - The 2016 Brussels bombings take place leaving 32 people dead and 3 terrorists killed with more than 300 people injured. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bombings.
  • March 24 - The International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) finds Radovan Karadžić guilty of war crimes and genocide committed during the Bosnian War and sentences him to life in prison.
  • April 6 - Aung San Suu Kyi is appointed State Counsellor of Myanmar.
  • April 26 - The Special Action Forces is founded.
  • May 12 - The Syrian village of Zara'a in Southern Hama Governorate is captured by Al-Nusra Front.
  • May 30 - The Extraordinary African Chambers find former President of Chad Hissène Habré guilty of rape, sexual slavery, and ordering the killing of 40,000 people during his tenure as Chadian president and sentence him to life in prison.
  • June 10 - Singer-songwriter Christina Grimmie is murdered after a concert in Orlando, Florida by obsessed fan Kevin Loibl, who commits suicide after being attacked by Grimmie's brother, Mark Grimmie, who had also been present.
  • June 12 - Omar Mateen perpetrates the Pulse nightclub shooting in Orlando, Florida, killing 49 people and injuring 53 others.
  • June 16 - British MP Jo Cox is murdered in Birstall, West Yorkshire by right-wing extremist Thomas Mair.
  • June 28 - The 2016 Istanbul Airport attack takes place. Three attackers and forty-five other people are killed, with more than 230 people injured. The Islamic State claims responsibility for the attack.
  • June 30 - Rodrigo Duterte is elected President of the Philippines.
  • July 17 - 2016 shooting of Baton Rouge police officers
  • July 22 - 18-year old David Sonboly goes on a shooting rampage throughout Munich, Germany, killing nine people and injuring 36 in the vicinity of the Olympia Shopping Mall before committing suicide.
  • July 28 - The Houthis establish the Supreme Political Council to serve as the governing body of Yemen.

  • September 6 - Danny Heinrich confesses to the 1989 abduction and murder of 11-year old Jacob Wetterling.

  • December 9 - Yahya Jammeh rejects the results of the 2016 Gambian presidential election, refusing to transfer power to President-elect Adama Barrow, forcing Barrow into exile in neighboring Senegal.
  • December 11 - An ISIL suicide bomber bombs the St. Peter and St. Paul's Church in Cairo, killing 29 people amd injuring 47.
