- April 16 – South Korean student Seung-Hui Cho kills 32 people and wounds 17 others before committing suicide in a shooting at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Virginia.
- May 3 – Madeleine McCann is kidnapped by Christian B from 5A Rua Dr Agostinho da Silva in Praia da Luz, Portugal while she was sleeping.
- May 16 - Nicolas Sarkozy is elected President of France.
- June 2 - Alexis Flores is placed on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List.
- June 10 to 15 - The Battle of Gaza: Hamas engages their rivals, the PLO-affiliated Fatah party, in military conflict. Hamas emerges victorious and becomes the de facto governing power of Gaza.
- June 24 - Professional wrestler Chris Benoit kills his wife and 7-year old son before committing suicide. His reasons for doing so are unknown.
- June 25 to July 16 - The Dnepropetrovsk Maniacs go on a thrill kill rampage in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, killing 21 people and recording it in a snuff film called 3 Guys, 1 Hammer.
- June 29 - The second round of peace talks between Uganda and the Lord's Resistance Army commence in Juba.
- July 23 - 16-year old Daniel Petry tortures, rapes and brutally murders his 12-year old neighbor Gabriel Kuhn in Blumenau, Santa Clarita, Brazil over an minor video game dispute.
- July 24 - 2 year old Riley Ann Sawyers is beaten to death by her mother Kimberly Dawn Trenor and stepfather Royce Clyde Zeigler, Jr.
- August 3 - Peter Connelly is killed by Tracey Connelly, Steven Barker and Jason Owen.
- September 12 - Joseph Estrada is found guilty of plunder and perjury and is sentenced to reclusión perpetua (life imprisonment).
- October 10 - SuccessTech Academy shooting
- November 7 - Pekka-Eric Auvinen commits the Jokela High School shooting in Tuusula, Finland, killing 8 poeple and injuring 13 others before committing suicide.
- December 27 - The Islamic Courts Union collapses. Militant Islamists that were members subsequently form Al-Shabaab and pledge allegiance to Al-Qaeda.
