- April 26 to 27 - Woo Bum Kon perpetrates the Uiryeong Massacre when he kills 56 people and wounds 35 others in several villages before committing suicide in Uiryeong County, South Gyeongsang Province, South Korea.
- May 2 - The Revolutionary Government Junta of El Salvador is dissolved.
- June 18 - Leopoldo Galtieri is removed as President of Argentina.
- August 20 - Carl Robert Brown goes on a shooting rampage in a welding shop located in Miami, Florida, killing 8 people. He was later shot and killed by police officers while attempting to flee the scene of the attack.
- September 16 to 18 - The Sabra and Shatila massacre occurs in West Beirut, Lebanon, carried out by pro-Israel militias. Between 460 and 3,500 civilians are killed. Defense Minister Ariel Sharon takes personal responsibility for the massacre.
- November 7 - Kenan Evren is elected President of Turkey, restoring democratic elections after 2 years of military rule.
- November 12 - Yuri Andropov, former chairman of the KGB, is named the new General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union after the death of Leonid Brezhnev.
